Dad Leaves Younger Daughter His House, Older Daughter Only Gets a Dirty Dish — Story of the Day
After a man’s passing, his will sparked a rift between his two daughters. He left the family home to one daughter, while the other received nothing more than a dirty dish, causing tension and division between them.
Helen and Julia, his two daughters, made John a proud father. They were the love of his life, although he inclined to side with Julia because she resembled his late wife more.
Helen was in her teenage years when Julia was born. In fact, before Julia’s arrival, John and his wife had nearly lost hope of having a child. Because of this, they gave Julia extra attention and care.
Helen, who had once been the sole recipient of their affection, felt deeply overlooked when they started showering Julia with love and giving her the finest of everything. This shift made Helen feel neglected and sidelined.
Her mother passed away when she was eighteen, leaving John to assume full responsibility for the girls’ care. It was a difficult assignment, and in the end he made Helen work as a dishwasher to help them make ends meet.
At first, Helen detested it and questioned her father’s authority to make her do it. “Why must I perform that action? One day, Helen told her father, “I don’t see other kids doing that; they’re all going to college.”
“You’re 18 now Helen, you have grown and you need to learn how to be useful to other people now,” he stated to her.
Helen answered, “You mean you and Julia,” and turned to leave him that day.
That was how they sparred for two more exchanges before Helen eventually consented to leave for work. The fact that her pact was legally binding did not make her jealous of Julia any less.
Helen’s perception of Julia as a spoilt youngster caused a rift between the two girls. Julia’s refusal to work was the main source of their constant disagreements, which grew worse as they grew older.
While Helen became used to working hard to help support the family, Julia’s teenage years were focused on partying and socializing. Before landing a job as a kitchen assistant and later advancing to a cook, Julia had spent some time working as a dishwasher.
As Helen’s career progressed, she gradually let go of her jealousy toward Julia. She had once longed to live a carefree life like her sister, but with time and maturity, she realized there was much more to life than parties.
Whenever Helen tried to caution her sister about the lifestyle she was leading, Julia would brush her off, assuming Helen was simply bitter and jealous. John offered no support, as he saw nothing wrong with pampering his miracle child, so Helen eventually stopped trying to intervene.
But after John died, everything was different. When his lawyer read his will to the two girls, the outcome shocked everyone, Helen foremost.
It was revealed that Helen had inherited a worn, dirty dish from their father, while Julia was given the family home. Although Helen initially considered contesting the will, she eventually decided against it, realizing that her 21-year-old sister needed all the help she could get.
Helen, on the other hand, came up to give her life and inheritance advice. “I believe you ought to sell the house and put the money you make toward college.” She said to Julia, “I never got to travel, but you can.
“Why are you interfering with my affairs? Julia answered, “You’ve always acted like you’re better than me, but I guess daddy didn’t think so.”
Helen pleaded with her sister, “Julia, I really think you should consider what I’m saying,” but she was not in the mood to listen.
Julia made fun of her elder sister, saying, “I don’t need advice and even if I did, it would not be from a mere cook.”
Though Helen felt hurt, she chose to let Julia manage her own life. The following week, she found out that her sister had sold the family home and moved into a more luxurious apartment in the city.
Upon hearing the news, Helen quietly thought to herself, “Good luck, sister.”
After several months, Helen was doing well. Subsequently, she stumbled found her father’s dish when tidying her small apartment one day.
She cleaned it and put it on her rack, planning to use it for special occasions, after deciding it shouldn’t go to waste.
She used the dish her father had left behind to serve the small group of friends she had entertained at her house one day. A historian was among those in attendance, and he did a double take upon seeing it.
Helen was initially doubtful until he pointed it out to her. The following day, the two of them brought the plate to an antique shop, where it was verified to be an expensive piece from the Chinese empire.
She made a great deal of money when she sold the two million dollar plate to a collector. She invested all of the funds in starting a restaurant, which within a few years was experiencing tremendous growth.
Julia, meantime, was not so fortunate. She threw parties with every penny she received from the sale of the house, and by the time the money ran out, she had nothing left. She eventually ended up on the streets.
Julia went to a restaurant that was well-known for providing food donations to the homeless one day because she was hungry. anyone informed her the owner gave more liberally than her friends, so she arrived early. She never contributed to anyone who were late.
Imagine her surprise when arriving at the front of the cue and learning that the owner, Helen, her sister, was well-liked by all.
Nonetheless, Helen graciously greeted Julia with wide arms, befitting a loving sister. She washed her up and took her home that day. Julia never looked down on her again when she offered her a position at one of her eateries.
What lessons may we draw from this tale?
Discontent stems from laziness. Julia was always spoilt by her parents, so when they died away, she was compelled to become lethargic. She begged for food on the streets after squandering her money on frivolous purchases till it ran out. Had she made any kind of investment, her narrative would have been very different, but she chose not to, and she had to learn her lesson the hard way.
Julia, aware that she had received much more than her sister, ignored Helen’s suggestion to use the money from selling the house for her education. Her pride kept her from listening. In time, she came to regret that decision, but fortunately, Helen was there to offer her support when she needed it most.
