Cold weather poses threats to many animals, just as it does to humans. They are vulnerable to ailments such as hypothermia and frostbite, so it is always comforting to see individuals go above and beyond to keep them warm.

Consider the farmer who devised a creative and surprising method to rescue a frozen newborn calf.

Dean Gangwer farms in Rossville, Indiana, where he breeds cattle. Dean discovered a startling new addition to his home one frosty morning in 2015.

Unbeknownst to him, a cow gave birth in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, she gave birth to her calf on top of a snow pile, leaving the baby frozen.

I was shocked when I saw farmer putting newborn calf in a hot tub, but the reason broke my heart…

Dean tried to keep his eyes open and noticed that the calf was breathing strongly. In an attempt to save the cow, he rushed it to his home.

He used his knowledge of cattle to determine that the calf needed a hot bath. Dean just happened to have his hot tub, the perfect cow-sized bath, ready to use!

As weird as it may sound, the method was quite successful.

Leroy and I had a wonderful bath for an hour when I jumped in fully clothed and held him up to save him from drowning, Dean told WRTV. “We both came out warm, and I think the end story’s going to be great for him.”

Warm blankets covered the farmer’s calf after the relaxing jacuzzi treatment.

I was shocked when I saw farmer putting newborn calf in a hot tub, but the reason broke my heart…

The calf’s name is Leroy. When his body temperature returned to normal, the cow was ready to rejoin the herd.

While the farmer’s action to share his hot tub with the cows was considerate, timely, and helped save the tiny cow, he vows it won’t happen again.

“Leroy has finished his hot tubing,” he announced. “His days in the hot tub are over, but he may still sunbathe occasionally in the grass in the future.”
