Hairspray Stars Reunite for New Off-Broadway Musical

Marissa Jaret Winokur, Kerry Butler, and Laura Bell Bundy, three original stars of the Broadway musical Hairspray, are set to reunite for a new Off-Broadway show. The show, titled Mama, I’m A Big Girl Now!, will debut at New World Stages in New York City on November 2, 2024.

The trio, who played Tracy Turnblad, Penny Pingleton, and Amber Von Tussle, respectively, in Hairspray, have remained close friends since their time on Broadway. Mama, I’m A Big Girl Now! will offer fans a glimpse into their lives and careers, as well as a chance to relive the magic of Hairspray.

A Night of Nostalgia

The show will feature behind-the-scenes stories, musings on motherhood, and plenty of examples of the fierce and funny friendship that has developed between Winokur, Butler, and Bundy. Attendees can expect a night of nostalgia, filled with laughter, music, and heartfelt moments.

Musical director Andrew Byrne will drive a collection of creative mashups, original medleys, and hilarious parodies. Iconic Hairspray hits like “You Can’t Stop the Beat” and “I Can Hear the Bells” will also be featured, ensuring that fans will leave the theater feeling nostalgic and uplifted.

A Look Back at Hairspray

Hairspray premiered on Broadway in 2002 and went on to win eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show is based on John Waters’ 1988 cult comedy film of the same name and tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a plus-size teenager who becomes an overnight sensation when she earns a spot on a popular dance show.

The musical’s message of tolerance, acceptance, and empowerment has resonated with audiences of all ages. It has been performed around the world, and has also been adapted into a successful film and television musical.

The Reunion of the Original Stars
