My Ex’s Mom Invited Me to Her Wedding but When I Arrived, I Realized It Was All a Set-up
Nothing prepares Hayley for the truth when her ex’s mother asks her to design a wedding dress for her special day. A confession, a second shot at love, and an unexpected surprise are what come next. Life can take you in the most unexpected directions at times.
Adam and I had been separated for three years, yet I still couldn’t get rid of him. It takes time for five years of love to fade. His abrupt split was like a sucker punch; there was no explanation, no resolution, only stillness.
It was completed just now.
Then he began dating her almost a year ago. Miranda, my old pal. She was the face of treachery, and it was widely shared on social media with pictures of the two of them as captions:
The finest thing that has ever occurred to me is when you know!
I told myself to stop staring at her and block her, but I didn’t. Every picture, smile, and remark regarding her “forever love” was like salt on an open wound.
I was always in love with him. That’s the honest, sad reality. I know it’s pathetic. Since him, I have been unable to date anyone seriously.
I therefore believed I was having hallucinations when Lena, Adam’s mother, called me unexpectedly last month.
We never really got along. She had always been courteous but aloof, as if she was assessing me and always noticing that I was lacking something.
I thought I would never hear from her again after the split. But there she was, her voice oddly warm, on the other end of my phone.
She said, “Hello, sweetheart,” “I know this might be unexpected, but I have a favor to ask, Hayley.”
Lena informed me of her impending marriage. Married! She also requested that I create her wedding gown. She raved about how I was now one of the city’s most sought-after seamstresses.
“I’ve always admired your work, Hayley,” she remarked quietly. “I too have faith in you. I’m confident you’d make me something ideal.”
Admiration? Trust?
From Lena?
I almost dropped the phone. I was unable to identify the game she was playing. My gut told me to refuse, to end the call, and to block her number. And be done with that whole family, really.
But she pleaded. How could I refuse? No one else could do it justice, she remarked, and she will always be thankful.
“No one else will perform tasks that fit my age and physical type! And, Hayley, make me something to dream of. Would you please?”
Why I said yes is beyond me. Perhaps there was a part of me that wished to be near Adam once more. Or perhaps my curiosity was too strong to ignore.
In any case, I concurred.
I put a lot of effort into the garment during the following few weeks. The fabric had delicate beading along the bodice and was soft and ethereal, resembling spun clouds. I worked late into the night to perfect every stitch. Lena had desired a garment with lace that would have made her feel like a princess.
She murmured, “I know it’s foolish, darling,” “I wore a form-fitting white dress that did little to sculpt my figure when I married Adam’s father all those years ago. Right now, I wish to wear my ideal wedding gown.
I had Lena’s measurements, and strangely, they were the same as mine.
I made an effort not to consider it. However, it wasn’t shocking. Throughout our relationship, Lena was constantly at yoga, Pilates, or swimming with her pals.
The wedding day finally arrived. After carefully loading the dress into a garment bag, I traveled to the location. Like anything from a fairy tale, the stunning country mansion was hidden away.
I could see myself using this as a potential venue if I ever got married.
My gut twisted with uneasiness as soon as I pulled up.
I thought, Something’s wrong. However, I dismissed it.
I went inside with the clothes bag in hand. There was a gentle buzz of laughing as guests strolled about in suits and gowns as soft music floated through the air. Then I noticed it, though.
Near the altar, a huge banner glistened in the gentle light.
The names of the couple getting married were shown.
Right there, I froze.
Lena’s name wasn’t that.
Adam’s name was that. as well as mine.
Welcome to Adam and Hayley’s wedding!
I blinked, my thoughts racing. I thought my heart may burst from the speed at which it was beating.
“What… what is this?” I muttered out loud.
I heard someone say, “Hayley,” from behind me.
I jumped when I heard Adam’s voice. When I turned around, he was there.
Adam.
His eyes were softer, his jaw sharper, and he appeared older. But he was not grinning. He gazed at me as if I were the only person in the room while he stood there with his hands by his sides.
“What is this?” With a trembling voice, I demanded. “Why does that banner have my name on it? What’s going on?”
With a look of sadness on his face, he walked slowly in my direction.
“Please, just let me explain.”
I felt like screaming. I was itching to run. However, I was unable to move.
When I said, “You’ve got two minutes,” I crossed my arms over my chest.
He inhaled deeply.
“Three years ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life.”
I thought coldly, “Yeah, no kidding,” but I said nothing.
“I was going to propose to you, Hayley,” he replied. “The ring was mine. I had everything planned. Then she suddenly showed me something.
“She?” Knowing already who it was, I whispered.
He averted his gaze and said, “Your… my ex. Miranda,” in a regretful tone. “She played a video for me of you all enjoying a vacation. I believe it was Thailand. You were shouting that you didn’t want children while drinking. It was recent, she said, and you had been lying to me about wanting a family. particularly with me. Hayley, it broke my heart. I didn’t think I knew you at all.
My lungs whooshed with breath. I recalled the video. Years ago, I was venting after a drunken argument with someone who believed that all women must want children while we were on a girls’ trip. It was the same father who forced his wife to watch their children as he sipped his beer on the sand.
It was all about trying to be heard and had nothing to do with Adam.
“You didn’t think to ask me?” I suffocated. “You didn’t think that you could have taken five minutes to ask me about that video?”
“I know, Hayley,” he shook his head in agreement. “I made a mistake. She entered my brain while I was already at risk. I took Miranda at her word. I took her words at face value. And I gave you up. After that, she came clean.
“What?” I let out a gasp.
“Months ago. She made a mistake during a dispute. She warned me that I would overreact because the movie was outdated. She claimed that she couldn’t bear that you had me and that she wanted me for herself.
My eyes hurt with tears. What I was hearing was unbelievable. He allowed her to trash everything we owned.
He went on to say, “I ended things with her that night,” “Since then, I’ve been attempting to resolve this every day. How to get you back.
Still feeling totally overwhelmed, I shook my head.
“And this?” I pointed around. “What the heck is this?”
A tiny, apprehensive smile curved his lips.
“This is me not waiting any longer…”
Adam took a tiny black velvet box out of his pocket. Then he fell on his knees.
“I adore you, Hayley. I didn’t stop. I’m begging for your forgiveness even though I know I don’t deserve it. Are you going to wed me? “Right now, right here?”
My world spun as I gazed at him. Then it suddenly struck me.
Lena.
This was something she had planned. She knew and had requested me to make the dress.
And the reality? I still had feelings for him.
So I answered in a whisper.
“Yes, Adam.”
Lena showed up almost immediately, grinning like a lady who had just pulled off the century’s greatest heist and carrying flowers.
“You said yes!” she said as she gave me a strong hug. “Hayley, I sincerely apologize for how I previously treated you. It wasn’t until it was too late that I realized how much you meant to Adam. I appreciate you giving him another opportunity.
Makeup artists and stylists appeared out of nowhere. When my parents arrived, they were both astonished and overjoyed. Everyone had been prepared, but nobody knew if I would say yes.
I realized that the outfit I had created myself had always been meant for me when I put it on.
I felt something I hadn’t felt in years when Adam and I stood together at the altar, his hand in mine.
Calm.
The music played softly in the background as the crowd dispersed after the ceremony. The cold evening air cooled my red cheeks as I stood on the venue’s balcony.
I tried to take in everything that had transpired while I gazed at the horizon with my hands resting on the railing.
“Hey.”
From behind me came Adam’s voice. When I looked around, I saw him standing there with his tie loose and his eyes looking even warmer under the gentle glow of string lights.
I said, “Hey,” a tiny smile curling my lips.
He moved to stand next to me and we gazed into the night together, his arm grazing mine.
He said, “Are you okay?”
I shook my head and laughed softly.
“At the moment, I have no idea who I am. Joyful? Feeling overwhelmed? Are you still awaiting a ‘April Fools’ yell?
He laughed and his eyes grew softer.
“Hayley, it’s true. I swear.
After a brief period of silence, he spoke again in a more solemn tone.
“I’m not worthy of this. You. I am aware that I made a mistake. I’ve hated myself every day ever since I allowed someone else’s falsehoods to destroy something lovely.
My heart tensing, I looked to him.
“Adam, you ought to have spoken with me. I would have been honest with you. I was really hurt when you departed.
His jaw flexed as his face slightly fell apart.
“I understand. And if you’ll allow it, I’ll make it up to you for the rest of my life.”
I looked at him for a long time, trying to see any uncertainty or doubt on his face.
However, there was none.
“I’m here, aren’t I?” I muttered.
A smile that was a blend of love and relief curled his lips.
When he answered, “Yeah, you are,”
He lifted my hand and gave me a brief, passionate kiss on my knuckles.
“This time, I’ll get it right.”
The truth sunk into my chest as I returned the smile.
“This time, we will.”
“Love, come. Let’s grab some champagne and dessert.
For the first time in years, though, I felt as though I was right where I was supposed to be when he took me into his arms before we left the balcony.
