I Accidentally Answered My Husband’s Work Call — The Voice on the Other End Exposed His Double Life
The irate voice on the other end of Julianne’s husband’s phone betrays a terrible secret: her husband has been leading a double life. She must now take immediate action to shield her son and herself from the consequences of her husband’s dishonesty.
I would have responded “yes” if you had asked me that morning if I was happy. I might not have stated it with conviction, but I would have. Before the call, that is.
I divided my days between being a mother, a wife, and a volunteer at the school. The primary provider for the family, Raymond, was a mid-level manager who frequently arrived home late due to work-related stress.
Even though Raymond’s faraway gaze tore at me, I continued to persevere because of my eight-year-old son, Ethan.
However, I had no time to linger. I was adept at keeping up with the constant pace of life.
Ray turned away from me and picked up his briefcase as I was leaning in to say goodbye after seeing Ethan off to school on the bus.
“I must hurry. He hurried out the door, muttering, “Mr. Richards must be waiting for me already, and today is going to be crazy.”
He left his phone on the kitchen table, but I didn’t even notice. A few minutes after he departed, it began to ring, and I instinctively answered, assuming it was mine.
“Raymond,” a woman’s piercing, irate voice said. “I told you! I’ll tell everyone I’m expecting your child if you don’t get rid of her.”
My throat tightened. That voice seemed familiar to me. My sister Vera was there!
“Ray, I’m done waiting. This is your final caution. Inform her now, or else!”
The call died before I could yell or demand answers.
With the phone gripped so hard that my knuckles became white, I stood still. My serenity had always been disturbed by Vera. She flitted through existence, bringing charm and turmoil in equal measure. She was beautiful, irresponsible, and fascinating.
She was now expecting my husband’s child. How long had they been cheating on me?
I felt as though my body was running on autopilot when a weird, aloof impulse took over. With the password I’d seen Raymond input a thousand times blazing in my brain, I hovered my hand over the screen before unlocking his phone.
As I browsed through the texts, my fingers shook. Dozens more texts were also included, a web of secrets I was never meant to discover.
“When are you going to tell her?” was Vera’s adamant request. Ray, I can’t do this any longer. She has no idea.
Then Raymond’s measured, cautious responses: I simply need more time. I want to do it correctly. Everything will be ruined if she finds out, therefore we can’t risk it.
As I put it all together, the bile surged in my throat. Their plan was cold and well-thought-out.
They would depart from their spouses in a way that would make their affair completely undetectable. Vera was prepared to part ways with Jack, and Raymond had been considering how to discreetly and amicably leave me without jeopardizing his income.
One of his texts said, “She won’t get a penny.” I’ll see to that.
When my knees gave out, I fell on the kitchen floor.
I didn’t care when the phone fell out of my hand and clattered on the tiles. The weight of betrayal was like a smothering blanket as I sat there, trembling.
In my mind, Raymond’s deliberate lies were overlaid over Vera’s voice. As I set the table for family dinners and bid Raymond good night, the two people I trusted most in the world had plotted against me and were whispering to each other behind my back.
The betrayal was more than just a sting; it was a burning, never-ending pain that clouded my view.
I tried to ignore it all by putting my hands to my face. But now it was ingrained in my memory. My sister and my spouse were planning to destroy me.
I felt completely free for the first time in my life. However, I refused to allow them to ruin my life. And I wouldn’t allow Ethan to be harmed by their self-centeredness.
I was propelled by anger, which helped me focus as I picked up my keys and made my way directly to Vera’s husband’s office.
Jack has the ability to bring order out of chaos. He was precise, level-headed, and as far from impetuous as one could get—everything Vera wasn’t. Jack was the only person who could help me.
There was silence in the office building. I strode passed Jack’s secretary’s desk, which was unoccupied, my sneakers squeaking on the shiny flooring, but she wasn’t even there yet.
When I got to his door and knocked more forcefully than I meant to, my heart was thumping in my chest.
Jack said, “Come in,” his calm, deep voice echoing through the door.
When I entered, he looked up from his desk and knitted his brow in perplexity.
“Julianne?” His gray, piercing eyes flashed with alarm as he arose. “What’s the matter? Has something occurred?
I didn’t make an effort to be polite. I walked across the room and placed Raymond’s phone on his desk, my hands shaking.
“Jack, I must tell you something vital. It has to do with Vera and… I stumbled and my voice caught. “You’ll need to see it for yourself.”
I remained standing even though he motioned for me to sit. As he picked up the phone and went through the messages, his eyes remained fixed on me. His face reddened with every swipe. His grasp on the phone became hard, and his jaw tightened.
“Goddammit, Vera,” he whispered to himself, his composed exterior erupting.
Exhaling gently, he squeezed the bridge of his nose and put the phone down harder than needed. I was afraid he was going to blow up, but instead he took a notepad from his desk and opened it. He moved with purpose and accuracy.
He stated, “We need a plan,” in a clipped, businesslike voice.
Startled by his poise, I blinked at him. “Are you not astonished? Hurt?
Saying, “No, I’m furious,” he looked directly into my eyes.
Although his tone was cool, there was a hint of threat in it. “Vera’s always been mercurial, but this time she’s gone too far.”
His jaw clenched, he tapped his pen across the notebook. “I’m going to file for divorce. And I will assist you in doing the same. They have no chance with this kind of proof.
Something steadier took the place of my earlier rage as I dropped into the chair across from him.
“Jack,” I uttered softly. “Thank you.”
He started writing notes, his lips pressing into a narrow line. “Thank you not yet. This will be a messy situation. But they haven’t given us an option. Even if I have to pull some strings, we’ll need to act quickly. This is our plan of action.
Jack described his plan while continuing to take notes. As I absorbed it all, my determination grew stronger. I was generally relieved, but I was a little amazed at how fast he calculated every step.
In this battle, I wasn’t by myself. Jack and I would ensure that Raymond and Vera were held accountable for their treachery and that neither of us had to deal with the fallout on our own.
Raymond and I had dinner with Vera and Jack that night. As soon as I got home, I texted Vera the invitation. Ray had left his phone at home, so I had called his office to let him know.
“Oh my God,” he whispered, his voice tinged with fear. “Just… switch it off and put it in my nightstand drawer, okay?”
“Sure, honey,” was my response. “By the way, tonight we’re having dinner with Jack and Vera. On your way home, would you be able to grab a bottle of wine?
I then made arrangements for Ethan to spend the night at a friend’s house. Jack had everything planned out by the time we sat down to eat that night.
In front of Vera, I poured a big glass of wine and placed it down.
“Oh, no wine for me, Jules.” She gazed at Raymond sharply. “I’ve been feeling a little under the weather lately.”
“I guess that makes sense,” I answered. “The first trimester is rough and pregnant women aren’t supposed to drink, are they?”
Raymond’s hand clenched on the table’s edge as Vera’s fork clanked on her plate.
I said, “Oh, don’t act surprised,” “I know about the affair, the baby, and your little plans to leave me with nothing.”
Jack, who had been waiting for his cue, got up from his chair and retrieved two folders.
Saying, “These are your divorce papers,” he laid one packet in front of Ray and slammed the second one down in front of Vera. “And these are yours.”
Panic flooded Raymond’s eyes as he turned to face me. “Julianne, please…”
“You don’t get to talk!” My voice trembled with anger as I snapped. “For what purpose have you ruined everything? “Her?”
Raymond glanced back at me after glancing at Vera, who was now crying aloud. He didn’t respond. Deflated, he simply gazed at the table.
Over the next few weeks, Jack and I collaborated as a team. In court, he persisted and assisted me in obtaining a settlement that guaranteed Ethan and I would be alright.
Raymond lost everything he owned, his reputation, and what little dignity he believed he still had. Vera was forced to deal with Jack’s request for full custody of his kids.
Our tiny community was rocked by the scandal. Both Raymond and Vera were unable to enter the grocery shop without being followed by whispers because everyone was aware of what had transpired.
I had a weird feeling of calm one evening while I was watching Ethan play in the yard. My life was not what I had assumed. It was difficult, convoluted, and messy. However, it belonged to me, and I could mold it into something different.
