Homeless Man Learns He Has a Daughter and Fights to Bring Her Home from the Shelter

Homeless Man Discovered He Had a Daughter and Started Working Hard to Take Her from the Shelter

After losing everything and becoming homeless, Dylan discovers a startling secret: his ex-girlfriend left his three-year-old kid in a shelter. In an attempt to demonstrate that he is the father young Lila needs, Dylan sets out on an emotional voyage of redemption, determined to give his little child the life she deserves.

A sign outside the Shoe Emporium said, “Will clean your shoes for $1.” Dylan was sitting stooped on the wooden bench, his hands clutching the sign.

He hardly sensed the spring chill that sliced through his frayed coat. Two years had passed since his life completely collapsed. He has lost everything for the past two years.

Tina, the woman he believed he would spend the rest of his life with, his career, and his house.

Tina had left with ruthlessness and speed.

She had added, “You’re stuck, Dylan,” with her bag by the door. “And now… Gavin is offering me a life you’ll never be able to give me.”

He saw her no more after that. His drinking had begun by the time she was gone. After that, it actually got out of hand and destroyed his career.

His flat followed shortly after he lost his job, further depressing him.

Dylan was brought back to reality by the sound of high-end heels scuffing the sidewalk. Ready to inquire if they wanted him to wipe their shoes, he looked up. However, he froze upon seeing who it was.

A woman was searching through her huge handbag while wearing a cream blazer and gold jewelry. Vanessa.

Tina’s closest companion.

Dylan moved uneasily, hoping she wouldn’t see him. But like a hawk spotting prey, Vanessa’s keen eyes fell on him. Her face changed from astonishment to disgust.

“Dylan?” There was laughter in her voice. “Is that really you?”

He reluctantly nodded, unable to ignore her.

“Yes. He said, “Hello, Vanessa.”

“Well,” she said with a little chuckle. “Hasn’t life been challenging at times? The fall of the powerful.

Although her remarks hurt, Dylan remained calm. He has heard worse.

Vanessa cocked her head, a smirk twisting her lips.

She drewled, “Did you ever figure it out?”

“Figure what out?” Dylan frowned as he asked.

What on earth could she be talking about?

She rolled her eyes. “Oh, for God’s sake,” she said. “The child. Tina had a child. Your child. She never told you, did she?

Dylan’s heart stopped beating. The roar of blood in his ears drowned out the street noise.

“What did you just say?”

“Oh my god, Dylan. Get up. Adhere to the program.

“Please, Vanessa, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

For a minute, Vanessa gazed at him, her eyes softening slightly. She let out a sigh.

Vanessa said, “Tina had a baby after she left you,” as she examined her manicure. “Gavin didn’t want to be the child’s stepfather. And Tina abandoned the poor thing in a care facility when she was around a year old. How long has it been? Two years? Wait, please. Yes, I believe that by now she would be around three years old.

Dylan got up with a stutter.

“You’re lying, Vanessa.”

Vanessa gave a loud snort.

“Why would I fabricate this? Last month, I ran across Tina at a gathering. The way she had ‘fixed’ her life was almost a boast. She predicted that Gavin would pop the question at any moment. She has an opulent lifestyle.

Vanessa’s tone oozed contempt as she drew closer.

“Maybe it’s time you fixed yours.”

She stormed out, her heels tapping on the sidewalk before Dylan could reply.

Dylan was standing on the porch of a large mansion in one of the most affluent areas of the city the following day. He had parked outside Tina’s house a couple of nights after she moved in with Gavin, so he knew where she lived.

It was before the automobile was hauled away, however.

He gazed at the elaborate door before him, his hand clenched. He knocked twice.

Tina, wearing a silk top and yoga pants, was standing there with a glass of white wine when the door opened. She widened her eyes in surprise.

Then she gasped, “Dylan?” “What are you doing here?”

He said, “I need answers,” and moved forward. “I was informed about the baby by Vanessa. Our infant.

Tina’s face went white. She shut the door behind her and went outdoors.

“With her mouth moving in that manner, who in the heck does she think she is? simply due to the fact that I failed to invite her to my massage party last month. She is really resentful.

Dylan said, “Tina,” with firmness. “Is it accurate? Is my daughter mine?

She placed her wine glass on the entryway table and sagged her shoulders.

“Yes, Dylan,” according to her. “That’s accurate. Lila is her name. I gave her that name because I admired a character with that name on a television program. She is now three years old.

Dylan’s chest constricted as the rage boiled beneath the surface.

How could Tina have mentioned these things in passing?

“What kept you from telling me? He swallowed hard and stopped himself, asking, “Why did you…” “Where is she?”

Tina tensed up defensively.

“Are you aware of how difficult it was? Gavin did not want a child in the picture, so I tried to raise her alone. And I had migraines just thinking about returning to you. Always. Gavin then set me a deadline. I took the necessary action.

“You abandoned her!” Dylan spit out. “Your own child!”

Tina’s mouth clenched.

“Don’t act like you’re some saint, Dylan,” she replied. “When I left you, you were in disarray and barely managing your grocery store job. Really, I mean it. Do you believe you were capable of caring for a baby at that time?

He insisted, “Where is she?”

Tina paused.

Sunnyside Care Center is where she is. Downtown is where it is. Look, though, she might not be there at all. Perhaps she was adopted by a family and is now living her life. They are unable to get in touch with me at all because I requested a clean split.

Dylan’s hands were shaking. What made someone so icy?

“Tina, I need evidence. I require proof that I am her father.

Tina laughed.

“For what purpose? Okay, wait here. I had her birth certificate put on you.

She vanished down one of the corridors and came back holding a folded piece of paper.

“Her birth certificate is included. Now, Dylan, get out of my way. Your time is being wasted. They will never give her to someone like you if she is present.

With the birth certificate in his shaking hands, Dylan walked into the Care Center, his pulse pounding. He was greeted at the front desk by Sheila, the director, a sweet-natured woman.

“I’d like to see my daughter,” he said, passing the document to her. “Well, I’d like to know if she’s here.”

Sheila looked at the page, then nodded.

“Lila! Oh, what a lovely little kid Lila is. Sir, she’s an artist. She always has some sort of paint on her hands.

“So, you’re telling me that my child is here?” With a sigh of relief, he inquired.

Sheila said, “Yes, she is,” with a smile. “Follow me.”

She ushered him into a well-lit play area. A young girl with wide brown eyes and chestnut locks was seated at a small table with a young boy. She was stunning.

Dylan’s throat tightened with breath.

Then he muttered, “That’s her?”

Sheila gave a nod.

“That’s our Lila-girl,” she introduced herself with a warm smile. “We’ve struggled to find her a home. People appear to struggle with commitment in the end, even if they come in and love her.”

“That’s because she’s not theirs…” he replied.

Dylan’s legs felt like lead as he took a step closer. Lila’s eyes met his as she raised her coloring book. Her eyes were curious, but she didn’t smile.

He mumbled aloud, “She’s beautiful,”

Sheila cleared her throat and motioned for Dylan to join her into a small couch-lined space outside the playroom.

When she said, “I need you to tell me everything,” “I must comprehend the circumstances at hand. I only know that Lila was abandoned by her mother.

Dylan took a seat in an armchair and filled Sheila in on all he had learned lately.

“I must tell you the truth, Dylan. Getting custody will be difficult. You’ll require court approval, a reliable source of income, and a place to live. While Lila is still here, you will also need to cultivate a friendship with her. The judge must observe your interactions with her. We will need to assign a social worker specifically to your case. Additionally, they will provide you with the best-case scenario and document everything.

Dylan grinned and nodded.

“I’m glad the process is so thorough,” he replied. “But, ma’am, I want you to know that I’ll stop at nothing. This child is deserving of better. “She deserves everything.”

Sheila remarked, “I’m glad you think so,” “I concur. Like all our children, Lila is unique. But Dylan, if you want this, you have to fight for it. You must persevere.

The weeks that followed were a haze of disappointment and rejection.

Dylan mentioned that he had previously worked as a manager when he applied for positions at every store he could find. However, the majority of hiring managers and agents hardly gave him a look before shaking their heads or laughing.

In a desperate attempt to get attention, he began sweeping the streets outside of shops at night. The fact that he needed a job was all that mattered to him.

The proprietor of a bodega once went outside to observe him at work one evening.

The man remarked, “You’ve been out here every night,” “Why?”

Dylan put his broom down.

“I was a store manager once. After my fiancée broke up with me, I lost everything. I am currently working to have my kid removed from the shelter.

The elderly man looked at him for a while.

Saying, “Come inside,” “I have some leftover sandwiches from the deli, but I have to cash up soon. Let’s chat while we eat.

For months, Dylan scrubbed floors and unloaded boxes as a cleaner. Mr. Diego, the owner, gradually started giving him greater responsibility.

Dylan came across inefficiencies in the store’s system one day while rearranging the backroom. He presented his thoughts to Mr. Diego with trepidation. He was surprised when the man listened and put them into practice.

Mr. Diego remarked, “You’ve got a good head on your shoulders,” “Let’s see how far you can go.”

Dylan discovered a wallet on the floor the following day. It was heavy and full with money. He took it to Mr. Diego right away, curious about how much was packed within.

“I left it there,” grinned the elderly man. Dylan, you also passed the test. What would you think about running this establishment?

Dylan was standing in the small one-bedroom apartment he had rented with his funds six months prior. It was simple, but it was warm, clean, and prepared for Lila.

He promised himself that he would soon relocate them to a larger space, so he turned a small alcove into a bedroom for Lila.

Sheila smiled at him when he came back to the Care Center.

“You’ve done everything we asked, Dylan,” she replied. “Lila’s caseworker has approved the custody transfer.”

Lila entered the room a few moments later, holding a plush bunny. Her little face was apprehensive as she paused.

The words “Hi, Daddy,” she said. “What are we going to do for our visit today?”

He said, “Baby, we’re going home,” and reached for her tiny hand.

Dylan was behind the counter of his own store two years later. Mr. Diego had trusted him to continue the firm after retiring and had sold it to him on credit.

Five-year-old Lila was sitting on the floor behind the counter, coloring pictures of sunshine and rainbows. Dylan’s heart grew grateful as he looked at her.

Although it wasn’t ideal, their life was theirs.

And Dylan felt entire again for the first time in years.
