Which Movie Just Got a Staggering 17-Minute Standing Ovation at the Venice Film Festival?

Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton received a 17-minute standing ovation for their Pedro Almodóvar-directed film ‘The Room Next Door’

 

Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton One movie just got the longest standing ovation of the 2024 Venice Film Festival so far!

Actresses Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton received a whopping 17-minute standing ovation for their movie The Room Next Door on Monday, Sept. 2.

In a video shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) by Deadline, Swinton, 63, wrapped her arms around Moore, also 63, who dazzled in a gold Bottega Veneta gown, as the audience clapped and cheered following the film’s premiere.

Director Pedro Almodóvar also clapped the cast and soaked in the applause while sporting a pink Loewe suit.

Turning around to face the other side of the audience, Swinton then blew a kiss before placing her hand on her chest to show her appreciation.

According to Variety, at around 14 minutes into the standing ovation, Almodóvar was seen signing autographs and taking selfies with fans.

The outlet reports that the standing ovation surpassed the festivals’ applauses for Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist (12 minutes), Pablo Larrain’s Maria (eight minutes) and Justin Kurzel’s The Order (seven minutes).

Sony Pictures Classics debuted the first teaser trailer for the film on Aug. 20.

In the movie, Moore plays the role of Ingrid alongside Swinton’s Martha. The pair, who worked together at a magazine in New York in the early part of their careers, reconnect after Ingrid becomes a best-selling author, while Martha has cancer.

“Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life,” the synopsis reads. “After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation.”

 

 

Speaking to PEOPLE at the premiere of her movie Problemista in February, Swinton said that The Room Next Door is a “really delicate” story “about adults facing tricky adult things about friendship.”

“It’s really about good, good friends and what good friends do for each other,” she added at the time.

She also spoke about her excitement of working with Moore.

“We’ve actually met a couple of times over the years,” Swinton said. “We’ve always wanted to hang out more and more. And the best way of hanging out with someone you like is to work with them. And now we’re together and we’re loving it.”

The Room Next Door is in select theaters Dec. 20, then everywhere Dec. 25.
