Despite not being my daughters’ biological father, my husband assisted me in raising them. Ultimately, he made a big decision by himself that destroyed everything and altered my life.
I first met Nicholas during one of the most challenging times in my life. As a single mother, I was solely responsible for taking care of my two daughters and ensuring their needs were met. Despite the struggles, everything changed when I fell in love with him. Within a year, we were married, and soon after, we moved into the most beautiful home I had ever laid eyes on.
After a previous divorce, Nicholas had a son, Nick Jr., with whom he hardly ever spoke. Nicholas’s ex-wife made every effort to prevent him from seeing the child. He missed his son and detested her attitude.
Over time, he embraced the role of a father with such love and dedication that my daughters came to see him as more than a stepfather. They stopped calling him by that title altogether and simply referred to him as their dad. That was more than two decades ago. Today, my daughters are grown, and each has started a family of their own.
We are blessed with two wonderful grandchildren, thanks to my eldest daughter, Darlene. Nicholas absolutely doted on those boys, and their visits were frequent and filled with joy. One Sunday, they joined us for lunch, but I had something serious on my mind that I needed to discuss with Darlene. The night before, Nicholas had shared something with me that left me deeply unsettled, and I felt unsure about how to handle it. I wanted to hear my daughter’s honest perspective on the matter. Thankfully, Nicholas had planned to take the kids to the park. “Alright, Alice, sweetheart. See you later,” he said, giving me a concerned glance, fully aware that my thoughts were still lingering on our conversation from the night before.
“Mom, what’s going on?” Darlene asked when we were finally alone.
“Oh, Darlene. I don’t know what I’m going to do now. I don’t know if I’m being selfish or what,” I started.
“Tell me. We’ll figure things out,” she told me.
“Last night, your father revealed something that I’m not sure I can forgive. He willed this huge mansion to his son, Nick,” I explained.
“What? I thought he hadn’t spoken to Nick in years,” Darlene said, confused.
“He hasn’t! Ever after that big fight where Nick called him all kinds of names because Nicholas wouldn’t give him money,” I added.
“But then, he’s giving him this house? You live here too. You guys are married,” Darlene continued.
“That’s exactly the issue, sweetheart. He didn’t discuss it with me beforehand; he made the decision entirely on his own. Last night, he showed me the will, and it was already finalized and notarized. He’s even leaving all the money in his bank account to him as well.”
Darlene remarked, “It’s unbelievable that Dad would do this.” “I mean…I had no expectations for myself or my sister. But for 20 years, he gave us—his family—complete contempt.
“I feel that way. As if we had never been his true family after all this time! I am aware that his terrible mother had an influence on his kid, who has been mistreating him for a long time. Still, though…I don’t know what to do,” I finished and dried the tears running down my face.
“I’m just in shock. You guys have had the perfect relationship for so long. I was constantly discussing it with my hubby. Dad’s actions are unbelievable,” Darlene mumbled. “I’ll give Rosaline a call. Let’s find out her thoughts.
“Dad did what?!” Rosaline yelled through the speakerphone. “It’s unbelievable. I don’t want his money, but it’s unbelievable that he wouldn’t want Mom to be financially secure in the event of an emergency.
“Yes,” Darlene said to her sister, “that’s how I feel.” I continued to weep quietly in the interim.
“Well, I apologize. Even if I think of him as my father, I will not put up with this. You’re entitled to the money and the house, Mom. We are going to file a lawsuit right now! After yelling, Rosaline hung up.
“I wanted to stop this from getting worse. He’s my husband, and I know he wants to take care of Nick Jr. because he wasn’t there much of his life,” I told Darlene, hoping that she would convince her sister to back down.
“No, mother. Neither you nor Dad were at fault for that. In the event that something occurs, what will you do? You would be left homeless and impoverished. Rosaline is right. Unless he changes his mind, we have no choice,” Darlene urged.
With hesitation, I responded, “I’ll try to talk to him.” However, Nicholas was someone I knew. I was certain he wouldn’t reconsider. After Darlene and her children left that evening, I spoke with him. I packed my belongings and went to stay at Rosaline’s house because Nicholas wouldn’t move.
We offered him numerous opportunities to change his mind before taking him to court. Nicholas ultimately made the decision to sell the large house and give me half of the proceeds. There was no other choice, even if I didn’t want to divorce him. Thus, I also got half of our savings.
He destroyed our bond. I never saw him again, nor did my girls. Ultimately, he didn’t think of us as family.
What does this narrative teach us?
Financial difficulties have the power to destroy everything. In the end, Nicholas destroyed his marriage by ignoring a portion of his family in favor of his kid.
You must defend yourselves. Alice’s daughters wanted to defend her, but she didn’t want to sue her husband.
