My Daughter Started Coming Home from School in Tears and Stopped Talking to My Wife
I assumed it was just the difficulties of adolescence when my daughter began to cry when she came home from school. However, as the days passed and she completely stopped talking to her mother, I became aware that something more serious was going on. Something that would eventually completely upend our way of life.
Have you ever had a beautiful life just to have it ripped apart in an instant? For me, it began that way.
A life-altering secret was exposed by a single shift in my daughter’s conduct.
Before this, I had a wonderful life.
I was a software developer with a steady career, a wife I loved, and a 13-year-old daughter named Demi who brought humor into our family.
Although there were difficulties in life, I believed that overall I was leading the kind of life that most people only dreamed of.
That conviction persisted until the day Demi arrived at the door with puffy, red eyes.
I yelled, “Demi,” as I moved in her direction. “What took place? “Are you alright?”
She put her backpack down at the door and shrugged.
“Dad, it’s just schoolwork. She avoided making eye contact as she said, “Nothing serious.”
I didn’t want to bother her, but I also wanted to press her. It’s really difficult to deal with teenagers, you know. If you make one mistake, you’ll end up becoming the parent they detest.
However, there was something about her appearance that disturbed me. I was unable to discuss my worries with my wife, Nora, because she was at work.
“Are you sure?” Gently, I inquired.
“Yes, Dad. She brushed past me and went to her room, saying, “I’m fine.”
It was probably just a bad day, I told myself as I let out a sigh and moved on. But I had a sneaking suspicion that something wasn’t right.
Demi returned home the following day with the same appearance.
Her cheeks were red and her eyes were swollen, as if she had been crying the entire trip home. She sat differently this time. She appeared to be preparing for something.
I was compelled to ask again.
“What’s going on, Demi? It’s been two days in a row that you’ve been coming home upset. Was there an incident at school?
She yelled, “Dad, can you just… not?”Would you please? Don’t ask me. It’s not important.
I was taken aback. It was the first time she had ever spoken to me in that way.
As I raised my hands in surrender, I said, “Okay, okay,” “I won’t bother you about it.”
She glanced at me, almost remorsefully, and then went back to her room. She was more upset than I had ever seen her, and her excluding me only made it worse.
I couldn’t ignore this.
I brought it up to Nora in our bedroom later that night after dinner.
I started, “Nora, I’m worried about Demi,”
“Why?” she inquired. “What happened?”
“She has been coming home in distress, her eyes red as if she had been sobbing, and she refuses to explain the situation to me. She simply dismisses me when I ask.
Nora’s forehead wrinkled.
“I’ve been so busy with work lately, I haven’t noticed,” she said, her expression displaying a hint of remorse. “She and I have always been closer. Perhaps I can persuade her to talk.”
“Do you think something’s happening at school?” I inquired. “Or do you think we’ve done something to upset her?”
She shook her head, “I don’t know,” she said. “But tomorrow, I’ll speak with her. Billy, we’ll work things out. Do not be concerned.
The following night, I heard Demi’s voice coming from the kitchen while I was in the living room. As promised, Nora was attempting to speak with her after returning home from work.
The words were muted at first, but I quickly recognized that something was wrong.
“Don’t touch me, don’t talk to me, just leave me alone!” Demi’s voice was shaking with hurt and rage.
I rose and made my way to the kitchen.
Demi ran past me and went directly to her room, while Nora stood motionless.
“What on earth just happened?” As we heard Demi slam the door behind her, I asked Nora.
Nora gave a headshake.
Softly, “I don’t know,” she said. “I simply asked her if she was alright. She refused to give me a glance. Billy, I’m rather concerned.
Leaning on the counter, I tried to take in Demi’s response. She had never acted out like that before, and she had always been close to her mother.
“She told me not to bother her yesterday,” I responded. She is now excluding you as well. Nora, this isn’t a passing phase. Something is happening.
Her words, “Maybe I should’ve been around more,” “I’ve been so caught up with work, I didn’t notice anything was wrong.”
I put a hand on her shoulder and said, “This isn’t your fault,” in response. However, we cannot continue to ignore this. I’m going to her school tomorrow if she refuses to speak to us. Perhaps someone else, like her teachers, is aware of what’s happening.
Nora remarked, “Maybe that’s the best thing to do,” We’re being locked out here by her. There may be someone at school has the answers.
I wanted to get to Demi’s school on time the following day, but I was slowed down by traffic.

The bell was ringing by the time I arrived to the school, and kids were leaving in groups, laughing and chatting as they headed home.
I looked about, trying to find Demi. However, when I saw her, I was astounded.
She was conversing with another girl while standing on the sidewalk. I was quite aback by how much the girl looked like her.
They were identical in height, facial characteristics, and dark hair. Seeing two different versions of my daughter was like that.
They were followed by a car before I could comprehend it. After giving Demi a wave, the other girl leaped into the passenger seat.
My heart skipped a beat when I looked at the driver. I hadn’t seen that face in years, but it seemed familiar.
Todd was the one.
As he adjusted his sunglasses and looked at me, I gaped in disbelief. We looked at each other for a moment.
“Todd!” I yelled at that moment.
But he turned his head and drove away without even acknowledging me.
That struck me as odd.
Then I recalled that years ago, Nora had told me that she had broken up with Todd and had ceased communicating with him.
Did he still harbor that resentment? I pondered. Did he ignore me because of that?
I shook my head and returned my attention to Demi, who was now standing by herself on the pavement.
“Hey, sweetheart!” I yelled. “Come, let’s go home!”
I made the decision to question her about the other female as we were leaving.
Casually, “That’s Sierra,” she said. “She’s in my class.”
I said, “You two look so alike,”
She answered softly, “Yeah… I guess,” while gazing out the window.
I said, “Is something wrong?”
Her eyes narrowed as she turned to face me.
“Nothing, Dad,” she addressed him. “You don’t want to know what I’m thinking.”
She said something that made me shiver.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means…” she said, hesitating before shaking her head. “Never mind.”
Thinking it was just another of those enigmatic teenage moments, I ignored it.
But I kept thinking about Todd and that girl as I drove her home. I had a dreadful suspicion that I was going to discover the reason why something wasn’t adding up.
I waited for Nora to return home that evening while sitting in the living room. Everything that transpired that day was something I wanted to share with her.
Around 6:30 p.m., she entered the room.
“Hey,” she remarked as she kicked off her shoes and placed her luggage on the counter. “How was your day?”
I took a while to respond.

Rather, I gestured her to take a seat. “We need to talk.”
She said, “What’s going on?”
Starting with “I went to Demi’s school today,” I said. “I wanted to know what has been upsetting her. However, I saw something odd.
“Strange?” Nora tilted her head again. “What do you mean?”
“I noticed Demi conversing with a girl who had a striking resemblance to her. Then the female was picked up by an automobile. Can you guess who was behind the wheel?
“Who?”
I narrowed my eyes and replied, “Todd,” observing her response.
Her face went white at that moment. I appeared to have stated something that I was not permitted to discuss.
“Oh, really? “That’s… that’s unexpected,” she stumbled. “I, uh, I haven’t seen Todd in years.”
“You know what’s stranger?” I inquired. “As soon as I shouted out to him, he ignored me and drove off. He seemed to be trying to avoid being seen. Isn’t that strange?
Nora avoided looking at me, her hands twitching in her lap.
Her response was, “I don’t know,” “Maybe he, uh, maybe he didn’t see you.”
When I said, “Nora, stop,” “There is a discrepancy. Why would Todd leave in such a manner? And why does that girl resemble Demi so much?
Demi entered the room before Nora could reply.
For a while, she stood there and glanced between us. Then she asked, “Why don’t you just tell him, Mom?” with her arms crossed.
“Demi, what are you talking about?” With her eyes wide open, Nora asked.
“You’ve been hiding this for so long!” Demi yelled. “I know the truth, and it’s time Dad knows too!”
“Sweetheart, what truth?” Demi was asked. “What’s going on?”
“You saw that girl today… Sierra? With tears in her eyes, Demi spoke. “She’s my sister.”
“What?” I yelled. “How is that possible?”
“A few weeks ago, her father, Todd, came to pick her up from school,” she said. “He approached me as I was waiting for you. He muttered something strange, like, ‘You’ve come a long way. At your age, you resemble your mother exactly. At first, I thought he was being creepy, but then he produced a picture.
“A photo?” I inquired.
She gave a nod.
She said, “It was a picture of him and Mom.” “Mom was pregnant, and they appeared youthful. This was taken before I was born, he informed me. He claimed to be my biological dad.
“Demi, please!” Nora objected. “How could you think he was real? Could it be that he was lying?
Demi remarked, “I thought so too, Mom,” “Until I heard you on the phone the other day, I assumed he was lying. Todd was being told not to disturb you by you. Mom, I heard you mention his name. I realized then that he was correct. Sierra even informed me that her father claims that because we are sisters, we look alike.
“Th-that’s enough, Demi!” Nora shouted.
“No, Mom!” Demi yelled. “It’s time you tell the truth to Dad.”
I looked across at Nora. “What is she discussing? Tell me.
Nora remarked, “It’s nothing, Billy,” But the expression on her face did not match what she was saying. She was lying, and I knew it.
“Nora, tell me the truth. Be honest with me. I shouted. Is she the daughter of Todd? Is that accurate?
She looked from me to Demi and hesitated for a few seconds. And then she broke down in tears.
“I-I’m so sorry, Billy,” she let out in between tears. “I betrayed you. Many years ago. alongside Todd. His daughter is Demi.
I was shocked to hear it.
“What?” I muttered. “You… you betrayed me? And for thirteen years, you have been lying about it?”
Tears were streaming down her face as she nodded. “It was an error. As soon as it happened, I felt regret. I didn’t want Todd to destroy our relationship, so I took him out of my life. I wanted you to be unaware.”
I responded, “You lied to me,” and got to my feet. “You misled Demi as well as me. 13 years!”
Demi broke down in tears at that point. I drew her into an embrace right away.
The words “It’s okay, sweetheart,” I whispered. “This is not your fault at all. You have my undying love.
She sobbed into my chest as she held on to me.
“I hate her,” she said in a low voice. “I hate her for lying.”
My heart ached for her, so I held her closer.
I led Demi to her room and put her to bed after she had calmed down.
I went back to the living room and saw Nora sitting with her hands clasped over her face.
“How could you do this to me?” I inquired. “How could you lie about something so big?”
“I was scared,” she said in a low voice. “I assumed you would leave me if you found out. I was afraid of losing you.
I remarked, “You didn’t just lie to me,” “You misled Demi. Your selfishness has caused her to live with this confusion.”
“I’m sorry,” she cried to herself. “Don’t leave me, Billy, please. This is something we can resolve.”
Having already made up my mind, I shook my head.
“Perhaps I could have forgiven you if you had told me at the time. But 13 years of concealing this? Letting me fall for a falsehood? That is beyond my forgiveness. Nora, we’re done.
She pleaded and pleaded, but I had already decided. There was no longer any trust. It was irreparably broken.
Demi and I relocated to a different location a few months later. I obtained full custody of my kid after filing for divorce.
We began reconstructing our lives together, one step at a time, even if it wasn’t easy.
